Pretpos...

How to restore TP-Link MR-3420 V5 to factory firmware

If you’ve upgraded your TP-Link MR-3420 V5 to OpenWRT firmware, you might find that you can no longer flash back the original system firmware. Trying to flash the official firmware from TP-Link results in a “soft brick” (all lights light up and then WAN lights up orange and the router reboots). If you already have a soft-bricked router, re-flash OpenWRT using a TFTP server, like shown in my tutorial here. Log in to OpenWRT with SSH (192.168.1.1, user root, password empty or whatever you set) and...

OpenVPN in 4MB - Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the TL-WR840N

I'm a big believer in privacy and don't want my ISP to collect data about my browsing. I have decided to setup an OpenVPN server on a DigitalOcean droplet for $5/mo (Get your own server here with $10 credit). However, for whatever reason, I wanted to set up the VPN on the router level, so that all my devices get it's benefits. The router I choose to do this is TP-Link's TL-WR840N V5, which only has 4 MB of Flash memory, but has 64 MB of RAM. The 4 MB of flash are a showstopper in most cases for...

Restoring a bricked TP-Link router with TFTP

If you accidentally brick (install wrong firmware or misconfigure) your TP-Link router (in this case a TP-Link TL-WR740N v5), you can easily restore it without UART access by utilizing the built in bootloader's recovery feature. This works by setting your computer's IP to 192.168.0.66 and then holding the Reset button while the router is turning on. It will pull the recovery image from TFTP and install it and then reboot. Resources Stock firmware for TL-WR740N v5 (or as a ZIP) TFTP daemon for W...

Increase Internet speed by load-balancing two WAN connections with WR740N and OpenWRT

If you have two slower Internet connections, for example DSL and WISP, and want to join them together, this tutorial is for you! Using a cheap router, OpenWRT and some skills and time, you can convert your ordinary router into a load balancing and auto-failover routing machine! Pretty cool! We will be using the software called mwan3 as well as iptables to load balance the two connections. Note: I’m using OpenWRT and LEDE project interchangeably here, because they’re the same project basically, a...
